Back to the front page with you!

Seriously though I don't know. I'm going to submit a few writing samples and go for it.

My vague impression is that it would be cool as long as you don’t need to actually rely on the money... I have a Twitter friend who is a freelance writer/editor, and it seems difficult at times

You need to be VERY good to make any money with freelance writing... If you’re like me and aren’t that good of a writer, you must have access to unique things, stuff not many people have access to (I live in Japan. I very much know that chances would be very small for me to be able to sell articles if that wasn’t the case). If you’re a decent photographer, maybe try focus your articles on pictures a bit more than usual.

And spam. Spam your articles around to people that can get you published and spam new articles regularly. :)

After a couple of years writing for fun on Oppo, getting a whole bunch of stuff FP’ed, I decided that I wanted to get paid for what I do... Only very recently did I finally get money for that, and trust me, it’s not much... So don’t expect much money at all, if any. Just getting shit published is already a bit of a victory in itself :)

I’m not a journalist but I know many people who went to school for it. Some made it into the field, others didn’t.

The only advice I’ve seen/heard/can offer is take shit assignments that may involve no writing and go from there. Like, read copy for Weathertech for a while and try to flip that to writing two grafs in an ad. Then flip that into tagging products for digital spreads on company splash screens and digital catalogs for the accessory vendors who sell at Pep Boys. Then flip that to write PR for them to post on tire rack. Then flip connections there into a tire preview. Then flip that to an interview for someone at Bridgestone. Network right and just maybe if you’re lucky you’ll be able to write a promo for their company blog about how they got their tires on the Focus RS500. If you’re lucky, you’ll drive it, and just maybe at that point you can pitch to Jalopnik about the best feature in the redesigned glovebox.

So, pretty easy IMO.

Auto journo here: Start your own blog. Write about what you love. Build an audience. Use that as your resume and start pitching stories to other publications. Disclaimer, the pay is shit and I love every bit of this job.

Well I already work in the wine industry so I’m used to shit pay, hence the side gig... But good advice!

I’m trying to do what you are and Oppo is my first stop. Pictures and resto/fix it posts are my specialty. I’m not great, but I’ve been told I’m entertaining. I’m still trying to set my style and bring an audience. Ideally I would like to become an Appalachian correspondent for a magazine/website. There is little to no coverage of the greater area in which I live (WV, KY, OH, PA save for the Carlisle events, VA) and I want to be that guy that informs people of that stuff. There are local hotrod shops and collectors that no one has ever heard of that are talented or have eclectic tastes.

Good luck on your endeavors. If you get any leads holler at Forge.
